People jumping into this book blindly may soon find themselves wishing they had informed themselves somewhat beforehand. However, I enjoyed Rushdie’s wildly imaginative work on display. Chamcha, having miraculously regained his human shape, wants to take revenge on Farishta for having forsaken him after their common fall from the hijacked plane. I really think Rushdie and this novel in particular would benefit greatly from end notes. Even more interesting was to know that the phrase Satanic Verses was coined by western academies, the Muslims calling them Bird Verses.

It’s the dream sequences interleaved with the protagonists’ stories that caused the controversy. It’s gotta be good. First of all, while it is certainly unique in style and technique, I didn’t find it so hard to follow as many have suggested, although I recognize that, ignorant as I am of most things concerning the eastern history and tradition, I was bound to miss many implications that were definitely there, despite the helpful footnotes every now and then.

I might revise my opinion on a reread, but while I’m sure diehard Rushdie fans will enjoy this book, for me it was only okay.
