Both were fed sterile food. The animals were anesthetized and a carbide bur was used to drill a hole through the occlusal of enamel and dentine of the maxillary right first molar to expose pulpal tissue. In many cases, perforations laterally or apically occurred and no attempts were made to restore these perforations causing food and debris to become packed into the pulpal tissues.

The animals were sacrificed at intervals from 1 to 42 days and a kakhashi resection was done and fixed and stained and evaluated. In the conventional animals, samples from the 8th day showed vital pulp tissue only in the apical half of the roots with the coronal portion necrotic and purulent and bacteria present. After the 8th day, was complete pulpal necrosis with chronic inflammatory tissues and abscesses. No pulpal repair tissue was evident in any of the samples.

In the germ-free animals, no completely devitalized pulp was found in any of the animals. Pulpal inflammation was minimal in every sample and no apical abscesses were found. Dental bridging was found at 14 days with older samples showing bridging at any angle regardless of severity of exposure. The presence or absence of bacteria is a major factor in healing of exposed rat pulps.
