Hell, anyone writing about police officers in any capacity must read it. I couldn’t recommend this fantastic book enough. There’s a problem loading this menu right now. I expected a bit more diversity in the examination of police procedure but it only focuses on the American system. Invesigation aside, this book definitely saved me from making a few embarrassing mistakes in my own work in progress featuring some crime-solving – I’m really glad I polce it up!
It is well organized, so you can easily locate just the information that you need, and it gives just enough detail to understand what you need to know to write about police investigations. A must read for anyone interested in DNA, search procedures, prisons, police codes, etc.

A disproportionate amount of popular crime shows and books are invwstigation in the United States – and for all those reasons, it’s a natural starting point and comparison Interesting and insightful book that made me realise there are so many more aspects of police and law enforcement work than I’d considered.
Handy primer for understanding cops’ duties, protocols, and lives. This book is a must have for writers who need to cover police procedures in their stories but have only experienced these procedures through the eyes of Hollywood. One of the challenges is that Lofland is trying to comprehensively cover ALL police departments, which is virtually impossible without writing a dictionary-sized book.
I’m not a cop so I don’t know the ins and outs of the criminal justice system. And they don’t investigate a crime on their own after getting suspended what I had in my plot and will now change —if they do, they most likely get fired.
