This is the only book of the series I’ve read, I really liked it, will definitely read more of the series. Suddenly one berserker behaves differently, stealing an entire orbiting biological laboratory filled with human zygotes rather than simply destroying it.

The first stories in the series are related by an individual Carmpan, the “3rd Historian”, who seeks to chronicle life in the Galaxy and the struggle against the Berserkers. When an assassination touches off a power struggle in the Empire of the Sabehagen Worlds, Prince Harivarman, who has been unwillingly exiled to a space fortress known as the Templar Radiant, senses that his political enemies are moving against him and that his life is in imminent danger.

I wanted to check out Saberhagen because he was yet another honoured SF author I only recently discovered was a Catholic.

Then the protagonist came riding in as a hero and we were treated to a quick summary of what had happened behind the scenes to get to that point. Saberhagen also wrote a series of a series of post-apocalyptic mytho-magical novels beginning with his popular ”Empire of the East” and continuing through a long series of ”Swords” and ”Lost Swords” novels.

Many ignore it and yet, unbeknownst to them, witness the story being told over and over in all its various forms. The final story is, of course, the best example of this – with a literal mind blowing situation presented, forcing both robots and companions to face the void, and finding only one response to be correct.

Shelve The Berserker Throne. Old rfed sci fi novel. If only in part to fully appreciate the strides and risks taken by the author to ram a wrecking ball to a staling genre, Saberhagen and Heinlein exemplify such.
