Cracks occurring in the corners of the bent portion shall not be considered significant unless they exceed the size specified for corner cracks in the product standard.

Included in the procedures are four conditions of constraint on the bent portion of the specimen; a guided-bend test using a mandrel or plunger of defined dimensions to force the mid-length of the specimen between two supports separated by a defined space; a semi-guided-bend test in which the specimen is bent, while in contact with a mandrel, through a specified angle or to a specified inside radius r of curvature, measured while under the bending force; a free-bend test in which the ends of the specimen are brought toward each other, but in which no transverse force is applied to the bend itself and there is no contact of the concave inside surface of the bend with other material; a bend and flatten test, in which a transverse force is applied to the bend such that the legs make contact with each other over the length of the specimen.
The specimen is bent to a predetermined angle or until the specimen fractures. Any cracks within one thickness of the edge of the specimen are not considered a bend test failure. This standard is also available to be included in Standards Subscriptions. Additionally, digital calipers can be interfaced with the testing system for push button input of crack measurements.
It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Any tensile testing can also be accomplished in the upper tensile test space. Subscribe to Instron News! This fixture allows for adjustment of the support span and is supplied with various sizes of loading mandrels to accommodate different asstm thicknesses. Product requirements for the material being tested determine the method used. No reversal of the bend force shall be employed when conducting these tests.
If the specimen fractures, the material has failed the test. If the specimen fractures, the material has failed the test. Link to Active This link will always route to the current Active version of the standard.

Add to Alert PDF. The software will generate real-time loading curves and can automatically end the test when the target bend is achieved or when the specimen fractures completely. The convex side of the specimen is visually inspected for cracks or defects, and failure is determined by the size of the cracks and imperfections allowed by the material specification.
WaveMatrix 2 for Dynamic Testing. The convex side of the specimen is visually inspected for cracks or defects, and failure is determined by the size of the cracks and imperfections allowed by the material specification.
The bend test helps provide a visual indication of the ductility of the material.
How can we help you? Materials testing software packages include bend applications that offer simple test set up and ease of operation when running this type of guided bend test. Check this box to receive pertinent commercial email from Instron focusing on products, upcoming events, and more!
This standard is not included in any packages. The DX or HDX Model dual test space load frames allow the bend test fixture to be positioned in the lower compression test.
